Course Syllabus

Welcome to EDUC AP 660 Principal Internship I.  Congratulation on your upcoming internship.  I am looking forward to working with you throughout the  Principal Internship Program.  The internship handbook is designed to review the important course requirements, help you understand the scope of the internship, and answer any questions you may have before the internship begins.  Almost everything you need to know about seminar speakers, assignments, etc., are included in the handbook.  If you have additional queries, you can contact your EWU intern supervisor, Dr. Pam Veltri at pveltri@ewu.edu or  pveltri2@gmail.com.

The internship covers an entire school year, including any summer work prior to the start of your internship year, that qualifies as intern work.  You will have needed to submit the summer hours form if you began logging hours prior to August 1.  ***NOTE: if you are starting your internship in the spring, you will count hours in the summer that are internship duties as part of your yearly internship and will not need to submit a summer hours form.  Your internship will end at the end of Winter quarter.  The intent of this requirement is to provide administrative experience with the opening and closing of the school year.   The internship is an essential and integral part of the Educational Leadership Program as it provides the "on the job" practical experiences for the candidate.  It is designed to develop the knowledge, skill and proficiencies and dispositions described in the Washington State Standards, (WAC 181-78A-270) .

EWU Authority.docx

Assignments for this course focus on mastery, therefore you will submit several drafts of  assignments through each internship course before the final assignment is completed and due at the end of the portfolio course.

The state of Washington requires that interns begin the year by  assessing their professional skills.  The process will help each intern target areas of professional growth during the internship.  You will complete your self-assessment ASAP at the beginning of your internship.

As you begin your internship, plan to assist your principal fully with the opening and/or closing of school.  Share the expectations of your internship with your mentor principal and begin to plan the leadership experiences which will develop your skills described in the standards.  Your mentor principal will receive an electronic copy of the "Mentor Principal Handbook" to assist in planning responsibilities for you during the internship.  Your mentor will also complete an online  pre-assessment of your skill level related to the leadership standards.  Remember, this is a pre-assessment.  A final assessment will assess your growth from the internship experience at the end of your internship.

This will be a challenging and exciting year for you and I look forward to working with you to make it a rich and rewarding experience.  Sincerely, Dr. Pam Veltri

ALL ASSIGNMENTS AND REQUIREMENTS OF THE INTERNSHIP CAN BE FOUND IN EACH MODULE AND IN THE INTERN HANDBOOK LOCATED UNDER "FILES".

7. Evaluation and Assessments (Grading):

The Internship is a complete or incomplete course.  You either complete all of the requirements and submit high quality work or you do not pass the internship. Assignments for this course focus on mastery, therefore you may submit several drafts of an assignment in each internship course before the final assignment is completed at the end of your internship. In order to be effective school leaders, certain values lead to successful patterns of behavior and attitudes.  Written work and presentations must present academic excellence through critical, reflective, and creative thinking, life-long learning, collaboration and shared decision-making, openness to new ideas, to culturally diverse people, and to innovation and change, integrity, responsibility, diligence, and ethical behavior, and service that enriches the community.  Graduate level writing should also reflect adherence to APA, spelling and grammar standards.  Discussion forums are assigned and REQUIRED.  YOU MUST SUBMIT A DISCUSSION AND RESPOND TO POSTS EACH WEEK FOR THE FIRST 6 WEEKS OF THE QUARTER.  THERE ARE NO EXCEPTIONS.  You have formal papers to write for the 4 Common Performance Tasks to complete in order to meet the Washington State Standards for Principal Certification.  The final papers will be due at the end of the internship and you will write pieces of the papers in each course. You will meet with your  mentor principal and discuss your progress on involvement in activities and experiences to meet WSS 1, 2, 3 and 4.  You and your mentor principal will revise your plan and update it to add any new activities and/or experiences.  You will discuss the plan with the instructor.

ALL assignments must be completed to mastery to receive a grade of Complete .

8. Masks Required. COVID-19 Safety Protocols: As of the start of the fall 2021 semester, everyone is required to wear a face mask while attending this course. EWU requires all persons to wear masks while attending in-person activities for this course. Students who fail to abide by this safety protocol will be reminded of the protocol and asked to comply. If a student continues to not comply, the instructor may ask the student to leave the learning environment on an emergency basis due to the threat to others’ health and safety. The student will not be allowed back in the learning environment until the student meets the safety protocols. This absence may impact the student’s grade and will be counted as an unexcused absence. The student may also be referred to Student Rights & Responsibilities for failure to comply with EWU Policy 602-02 (Immunization) and the Governor’s and university directives. If a student is not able to comply with the face mask protocol due to medical or disability-related reasons, they should immediately contact Disability Support Services and request an accommodation.
