What Courses Should I Take?
A common question that is asked by high school students is "What courses should I take?"
While there really is no downside to taking any college course, certain classes may not best suit you or your college plan. When deciding on taking a dual enrollment class ask yourself:
- Is this class a general education class at universities? Such as English, history, political science, psychology, etc.
- How will it transfer to where I plan on attending after high school? The easiest way is to visit the university or college's transfer guide. You can also call the transfer center or admissions office of the university or college. Credits may transfer as different courses as well. i.e. POLI 100 at EWU may transfer as GOVT 100 or CSBS 152 to another university. It doesn't mean it doesn't transfer, the receiving institution may just have a different course numbering system.
- The university or college I am looking at attending will take some of my dual credit classes as just electives, should I still take the course? It depends. You will need elective credit regardless of where you attend to finish your degree. The average 4-year degree requires 180 quarter credits and part of that 180 is made up of electives. If you are on the fence about which course to take, always take the one that will get you the furthest in your educational goals.
