FAQ
- What is EWU in the High School? An opportunity for high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors to earn college credit at their high school while meeting the requirements for high school graduation.
- What are the benefits of EWU in the High School? Earn transferable college credit, experience college curriculum in the familiarity of the high school, remain 100% active in high school activities, no traveling to a local college or university, and earn college and high school credit at the same time.
- What is the difference between EWU in the High School and Running Start? EWU in the High School courses happen on the high school campus. High school instructors have been approved by college/university departments to teach the college course. Running Start takes place on the college campus or online and is taught by college or university professors that are employed by the college or university.
- How are EWU in the High School and Running Start similar? Both options are actual college courses and will have grades transcribed on an official college/university transcript. The credits will transfer the same as traditional college credits.
- What is the difference between EWU in the High School and AP? Advanced Placement (AP) is credit by exam. Students may take an AP exam without taking an AP course. College credit is granted based on the score earned on the exam. Different universities have different AP Score policies for each exam and what type of credit will be granted. EWU in the High School is actual college/university credit with no need to take a specific exam. Students will earn transferable credit if they complete the course.
- Must a student earn a minimum grade in the college course to earn credit? We encourage students who are earning less than a C or 2.0 to drop the course so that they don’t risk academic probation once attending a college/university fulltime. However, a student can earn credit with a D or 0.7.
- How many courses can a student take per term? Students can take as many EWU in the High School courses as permitted by their schedule. Funding may limit the number of free courses available as well as any course requirements that must be met before registering for a particular course.
- Can I use these courses toward high school graduation? Yes!
- Do you have specific courses offered for EWU in the High School? Consult your high school guidance counselor for the course offerings at your school. Your school may offer courses from multiple colleges and universities.
- Will EWU in the High School courses transfer to other colleges and universities? It has been our experience that in most cases the courses transfer without a problem. However, it is best to consult the school(s) you are planning to attend after high school graduation to be sure.
- If I leave the school mid-semester, may I continue my EWU in the High School class at my new school? If the new high school does not offer the same College in the High School course through Eastern Washington University, the student would not be able to continue in the EWU in the High School program. A student leaving their high school must talk to their instructor about dropping them from any College in the High School course prior to leaving.
