PHIL 490 Senior Capstone - American Naturalism
In this course, the advanced student of philosophy consolidates and synthesizes philosophical scholarship and community-focused, practical application. As this is a seminar, students will be expected to provide course content in the way of in-class discussion. The instructor will serve as a facilitator of those discussions, but will rarely stand before the class and lecture. This is the format of many graduate courses, so this arrangement will be good preparation for students interested in pursuing graduate work in philosophy. Working collaboratively, instructor and students will relate the theories and methods of a particular philosophical movement – known as American naturalism – and the public intellectuals it produced, drawing conclusions about the nature of critical thinking, public argumentation, and social change. While this class is not limited to philosophy majors, students are advised to enter the class only with a record of achievement in two or more upper-division philosophy classes as well as a strong background in the history of philosophy.
