Urbanism and the role of architecture in reconstruction both after WWII and of a unified Berlin after 1989 has been one of the most contentious, expensive, and dynamic projects on the world scale. Similarly, the rebuilding of Seoul after the cessation of war in the Korean Conflict led to a divided nation, but not a divided city, as Seoul was constructed on the capital of the Josen Empire, a city site selected and designed to be the capital city in 1372. Emerging as a world city and a mega city in the Twenty-First Century with over 22 million residents, the plans for the future Seoul also reflect the underlying patterns and urban contexts set in the initial city design in the 14th Century.
