Welcome to Module 6 in SPED 470 Special Education Assessment! In this sixth module, we will learn about assessing specific learning disabilities and academic achievement. You will also submit your video and scoring protocol from your administration of the WJ-IV Tests of Achievement.

At the end of this module, students will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast specific learning abilities and learning strategies. (CO 1)
  2. Identify and discuss three examples of sources of information about specific learning abilities. (CO 2, 3)
  3. Name and describe a tool screening for sensory impairments. (CO 2)
  4. Name and describe a tool screening for learning disabilities. (CO 2)
  5. Explain the process of discrepancy analysis for the identification of learning disabilities. (CO 4)
  6. Explain the response-to-Intervention approach to the identification of learning disabilities. (CO 4)
  7. Define perceptual skills and how those skills are measured. (CO 1)
  8. Identify a test battery for specific ability assessment and discuss its components. (CO 2, 3)
  9. Give three examples of questions teachers could ask students to assess learning strategies. (CO 2)
  10. Discuss why it is important to identify the nature of the assessment tasks of an instrument when answering the assessment questions. (CO 2, 3, 4)
  11. Identify and discuss three examples of sources of information about school performance. (CO 2, 3, 4)
  12. List and discuss the four reasons noted regarding why group tests of academic achievement are not optimal for lower-achieving students. (CO 3)
  13. Explain the Dynamic Assessment of Test Accommodations in the context of test accommodations for students with special needs. (CO 2)
  14. Identify and describe two ways curriculum-based measurement strategies could be helpful in the assessment process. (CO 2, 3)
  15. Describe an example of assessment technique differences in answering the assessment questions. (CO 2, 3)
  16. Administer and score a core battery of tests from the WJ-IV Tests of Achievement. (CO 4)
