ART 155-001: Beginning Painting
Course Objectives
This is a course on painting as it relates to contemporary and conceptual art. Because there are only so many classes in a quarter, I would not be able to quantify all paintings in all cultures, so we will be focusing on a very specific kind of painting. We will be talking about painting concepts that originated in the early 1900s to the present. We will be focused on American and western European conceptual art. This course is for both art majors and non-art majors to learn a certain appreciation of art concepts and to learn how to express these concepts through painting. In the beginning of the course we will focus on the usage of materials, learning about different technical aspects and nuances of painting,
The second half of the course will employ these skills as a framework for composing conceptual art, There is no need for prior knowledge of painting or drawing. This is a course to allow the expression of ideas through the investigation of art terminology and critique. Students will be shown effective vernacular for critical observations, and practice ways that discussing art can make ideas available to a larger audience.
