PHED 125-031: Ballroom Dance
Since prehistoric times, humans have always expressed themselves by dance. Today, the desire is still within us and people dance for a multitude of reasons (exercise, socialization, religious, competition, etc.). Dance is an activity that can be enjoyed by all ages and societal levels, and an infinite number of individuals. Additionally, dance teaches many life and social skills and can provide a lifetime social activity.
GOALS
Ballroom/social dancing provides an outlet for increasing an individual’s social, mental and physiological development while remaining within the confines of a low pressure, fun atmosphere. Students will be given a working knowledge of the fundamentals of partnership dancing. In traditional Ballroom dance, focus is placed upon the male learning to lead and the female learning to follow. Each student should gain the self-confidence to be able to use their dance knowledge in real life situations (weddings, socials, company parties, etc.) where dance is the focal point of interest.
OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, the student will be able to:
Distinguish between and demonstrate the differences in the major social dances of choice.
Demonstrate the basic steps in each dance along, with a partner, with or without music.
Link music to the proper dance.
Know the difference in timing and rhythms.
Demonstrate various patterns and individual styling while maintaining the character of dance.
Demonstrate the fundamentals of framework for dancing using the proper “lead or follow” techniques.
